Activity Overview

The National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (NKUA) is Greece’s oldest university and one of the country’s most important centres of higher education and culture. Founded in 1837, it was the first university established in the modern Greek state and has played a significant role in the country’s intellectual and academic development.

Its historic main building, located on Panepistimiou Street, is one of Athens’ finest examples of Neoclassical architecture. Designed by Danish architect Christian Hansen, the building is distinguished by its elegant façade, grand staircase and richly decorated murals depicting important themes from Greek history and classical culture.

The University’s historic complex forms part of Athens’ celebrated “Athenian Trilogy”, together with the Academy of Athens and the National Library of Greece. Today, it remains an important landmark for visitors interested in Athens’ history, architecture and academic heritage.
