Activity Policies
- Entry: Lake Te Anau is a public natural attraction and generally does not require an admission ticket. Cruises, kayaking, guided tours, and other activities may have separate charges.
- Opening Hours: Public lakefront areas and accessible walking areas are generally available throughout the day, subject to local conditions and temporary restrictions.
- Booking: No booking is required for general sightseeing or lakefront walks. Advance reservations are recommended for cruises, guided excursions, kayaking, and other organised activities.
- Duration: Visitors can generally allow 1–3 hours for sightseeing and lakeside activities, or longer for cruises and guided excursions.
- Lake Activities: Boating, kayaking, fishing, and other water activities should be undertaken in accordance with local regulations and operator safety requirements.
- Safety: Visitors should be prepared for cold water, changing weather, strong winds, and remote conditions. Appropriate safety equipment should be used for water-based activities.
- Photography: Photography and video recording are generally permitted for personal use. Visitors should take care near the water and on lakeside tracks.
- Accessibility: Accessibility varies between lakefront areas, walking tracks, jetties, boats, and individual attractions.
- Children: Children should remain under appropriate adult supervision, particularly near the lake and during water-based activities.
- Weather Conditions: Weather in the Fiordland region can change quickly. Rain, wind, cold temperatures, fog, or rough water may affect outdoor activities and boat services.
- Wildlife & Environment: Visitors should not disturb wildlife, damage vegetation, litter, or remove natural materials. The surrounding Fiordland environment should be treated with care.
- Food & Beverages: Food and beverages are available at selected facilities around Te Anau. Visitors should follow local rules and dispose of waste responsibly.
- Cancellation: General access to Lake Te Anau has no cancellation policy. Paid cruises, tours, and activities are subject to the respective operator's cancellation and refund conditions.
- Changes to Activities: Cruises, guided tours, and water-based activities may be delayed, modified, or cancelled because of weather, lake conditions, safety requirements, or operational circumstances.
- Important: Lake Te Anau is New Zealand's largest lake by surface area in the South Island and serves as a gateway to Fiordland, offering spectacular scenery and access to experiences such as scenic cruises, lakeside walks, and excursions toward the Te Anau Glowworm Caves.

- General access to public areas around Lake Te Anau is generally free, subject to local regulations and access restrictions.
- Visitors must follow instructions from local authorities, DOC staff, guides, tour operators and authorised personnel.
- Visitors should remain on designated walking tracks, public paths, waterfront areas and approved visitor zones.
- Visitors must exercise caution around deep or cold water, slippery surfaces, steep areas and changing weather conditions.
- Children must remain under the supervision of an accompanying adult, particularly near the lake and boat departure areas.
- Swimming and water activities should only be undertaken in suitable and permitted areas and with appropriate safety precautions.
- Boating, kayaking, fishing and other water activities may be subject to separate regulations, permits and operator requirements.
- Participants must use required life jackets and safety equipment during applicable water-based activities.
- Visitors must follow the instructions of boat crews, guides and activity operators.
- Visitors must not feed, touch, chase or deliberately disturb native wildlife.
- Guests must not damage, remove or interfere with vegetation, rocks, wildlife habitats or other natural features.
- Littering, pollution and disposal of waste into the lake are prohibited.
- Fishing is subject to New Zealand fishing regulations, permits and local restrictions, where applicable.
- Visitors must respect Fiordland National Park conservation requirements and protected natural areas.
- Photography for personal use is generally permitted in public areas, subject to operator and site-specific restrictions.
- Commercial photography, professional filming or organised photo shoots may require prior permission.
- Walking tracks, waterfront areas and recreational facilities may be temporarily closed because of weather, flooding, maintenance, conservation work or safety concerns.
- Lake cruises and other water-based activities may be delayed, modified, rescheduled or cancelled because of wind, rain, waves, visibility, lake conditions or safety requirements.
- Visitors are responsible for their personal belongings and safety.
- Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the specific cruise, tour or activity booked.
- If a booked cruise or activity is cancelled because of weather, lake conditions, operational issues or safety concerns, refund or alternative arrangements will be handled according to the operator's terms.
- Late arrival or failure to join a booked cruise or activity may result in loss of the booking without refund, subject to the provider's conditions.
- If Lake Te Anau is included in an organised Queenstown or Fiordland sightseeing package, the tour operator's cancellation and refund policy will apply.
Cancellation Policy
Lake Te Anau is a natural lake and scenic destination and does not require an admission ticket or reservation for general sightseeing. Therefore, no separate cancellation or refund policy applies to visiting the lake. If Lake Te Anau is included as part of a boat cruise, guided tour, excursion, or travel package, the cancellation and refund conditions of the respective booking or service provider will apply.
