Activity Policies
- Entry: Lake McKenzie (Boorangoora) is located within K’gari (Fraser Island) National Park. Applicable park access and vehicle permit requirements apply.
- Booking: No booking is generally required for independent visits. Advance booking is recommended for guided K’gari tours and organised experiences.
- Opening Hours: Access is subject to park operating conditions, weather, road conditions, and temporary closures.
- Duration: Visitors can typically spend 1–3 hours at the lake, depending on swimming, sightseeing, and tour arrangements.
- Swimming: Swimming is generally permitted in the lake, subject to current park safety conditions. Visitors should follow all signs and ranger instructions.
- Water Activities: Visitors should use the lake responsibly and avoid activities that could damage the lake's fragile ecosystem.
- Photography: Photography and video recording are generally permitted for personal use.
- Accessibility: Access involves travelling along sandy and unsealed tracks, and accessibility may be limited for visitors with reduced mobility.
- Safety: Visitors should remain within designated areas, use sun protection, carry drinking water, and follow all safety instructions.
- Wildlife & Environment: Visitors must not feed or disturb wildlife, litter, use soaps or detergents in the lake, or damage surrounding vegetation.
- Weather Conditions: Heavy rain, storms, flooding, or poor track conditions may affect access to the lake.
- Cancellation/Refund: General park access has no cancellation policy. Paid tours, transfers, or organised activities are subject to the respective operator's cancellation and refund conditions.
- Changes to Access: Lake access or surrounding tracks may be temporarily restricted because of weather, road conditions, conservation work, fire danger, or safety requirements.
- Important: Lake McKenzie, also known as Boorangoora, is famous for its exceptionally clear freshwater and white silica sand. Visitors should help protect the lake by following all environmental and visitor guidelines.
Terms & Conditions
- Access is subject to the current K’gari national park regulations and visitor conditions.
- Visitors must follow the instructions of Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service rangers, tour guides and authorised personnel.
- Visitors must remain within designated visitor areas, walking tracks and approved access routes.
- Swimming is permitted only where conditions are considered safe and visitors should follow current safety advice.
- Visitors must not use soap, shampoo, sunscreen or other products in the lake water where prohibited by park regulations.
- Visitors must not damage, remove or interfere with sand, vegetation, wildlife or other natural features.
- Littering, vandalism and pollution are prohibited.
- Visitors must not feed, chase, touch or deliberately disturb wildlife.
- Children must remain under the supervision of an accompanying adult, particularly around the water.
- Visitors should exercise caution around slippery surfaces, changing weather, sun exposure and remote conditions.
- Visitors should carry sufficient drinking water, sun protection and suitable footwear.
- Camping is permitted only in authorised camping areas and subject to applicable permits and conditions.
- Fires are permitted only where specifically authorised and must comply with current fire restrictions.
- Photography for personal use is generally permitted, subject to wildlife, cultural and site-specific restrictions.
- Commercial photography, professional filming or organised photo shoots may require prior permission.
- Access to the lake, roads or surrounding facilities may be temporarily restricted or closed because of weather, fire danger, conservation work, road conditions or safety concerns.
- Visitors are responsible for their personal belongings and safety.
- Organised 4WD tours, transfers and other activities visiting Lake McKenzie may have separate booking, cancellation and refund conditions.
- Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the specific tour or activity booked.
- If Lake McKenzie is included in an organised K’gari tour, the tour operator's cancellation and refund policy will apply.
- If a tour is cancelled or the itinerary is modified due to weather, road conditions, park closures, safety requirements or other operational reasons, refund or alternative arrangements will be handled according to the operator's terms.
- Late arrival or failure to join a booked tour may result in loss of the booking without refund, subject to the provider's conditions.
Cancellation Policy
Lake McKenzie is a natural attraction within K’gari (Fraser Island) and does not generally require a separate admission ticket or reservation for general sightseeing. Therefore, no separate cancellation or refund policy applies to visiting the lake. If Lake McKenzie is included as part of a 4WD tour, guided excursion, or travel package, the cancellation and refund conditions of the respective booking or service provider will apply.
