Activity Overview

The Academy of Athens is one of Greece’s most distinguished institutions of learning and research and one of the finest examples of Neoclassical architecture in Athens. Founded in 1926, it serves as Greece’s national academy, bringing together leading scholars and scientists from a wide range of disciplines.

The Academy’s magnificent main building forms part of the famous Athenian Trilogy on Panepistimiou Street, alongside the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and the National Library of Greece. Designed by Danish architect Theophil Hansen, the building was completed in 1885 and is richly decorated with classical sculptures, columns and painted artwork.

The exterior is particularly notable for the statues of Athena and Apollo standing before the building, while the surrounding sculptures and decorative details reflect the artistic traditions of ancient Greece. The Academy of Athens remains an important symbol of Greek intellectual heritage and the enduring influence of classical culture.
