Activity Policies
- Entry: 4WD tours of Fraser Island, officially K’gari, are paid experiences and normally include transport, a 4WD vehicle, and selected sightseeing stops. Park access arrangements and vehicle permits apply to vehicles entering the recreation area.
- Booking: Advance booking is recommended, particularly during weekends, school holidays, and peak travel periods. Commercial K’gari tours operate from locations including Rainbow Beach, Hervey Bay, the Sunshine Coast, and Brisbane.
- Duration: Tours may range from full-day excursions to multi-day experiences, depending on the itinerary and departure location.
- 4WD Requirement: K’gari's beaches and inland tracks are sandy and require high-clearance 4WD vehicles, preferably with low-range capability. Standard cars and low-clearance vehicles are not suitable.
- Driving & Safety: All Queensland road rules apply on the island. Drivers must follow speed limits, tide conditions, beach-driving rules, and instructions from tour operators and park authorities.
- Tides: Beach travel is strongly influenced by tides. Routes and itineraries may be adjusted according to current beach and tide conditions.
- Wildlife: K’gari is home to wongari (dingoes). Visitors must not feed or approach dingoes, and food and rubbish must be kept securely stored.
- Photography: Photography and video recording are generally permitted for personal use. Visitors should maintain a safe distance from wildlife and follow guide instructions.
- Swimming: Swimming in the open ocean is not recommended in many locations because of strong currents, marine wildlife, and other hazards. Guests should follow local safety advice.
- Accessibility: Accessibility varies according to the vehicle, tour route, beaches, walking tracks, and natural attractions included in the itinerary.
- Weather Conditions: Tours may be modified because of heavy rain, storms, high tides, flooding, poor track conditions, or other safety concerns.
- Visitor Conduct: Guests must follow the tour guide's instructions, remain with the group, protect the natural environment, and avoid disturbing wildlife or cultural sites.
- Cancellation/Refund: Cancellation and refund conditions depend on the specific tour operator and booking package. Tours may have different conditions for weather-related cancellations or itinerary changes.
- Changes to Itinerary: Routes, attractions, ferry arrangements, and sightseeing stops may change because of tides, weather, road conditions, park closures, or operational requirements.
- Important: K’gari is a World Heritage-listed destination and its sandy beaches and inland tracks can be challenging. Visitors should check the current K’gari conditions report and follow all safety instructions before travelling.
